Opportunity for student / assistant researcher

We are looking for two candidates to collaborate on a project funded by the British Council, which will be developed through a partnership between the Federal University of Pernambuco (UFPE), the Federal University of Amapá (UNIFAP) and the University of Aberdeen, United Kingdom . The collaborator can be an assistant researcher, or a student who wants to develop his / her project within our main project.

The project We are working with communities within the Catimbau National Park (PE), with the goal of understanding how the Park affects the daily lives of local people, and how they interact with managers and other decision makers. We also want to elucidate the factors that are important to people's well-being, how well-being has changed over time, what natural services and products contribute to well-being, and how the interventions carried out by the National Park are seen by communities. These issues are part of a research project that investigates social equity in Protected Areas in Brazil.

The positions / grants The selected candidates will carry out semi-structured interviews with local people for a period of approximately 2 months, being obliged to stay near the field site (Catimbau National Park) during this period. A full training will be provided at the beginning of the field activities. The accesses to the communities are by dirt roads, and at least one of the selected candidates must have a driver's license. After completion of the field, treatment, compilation and analysis of the data will be required. There will be possibility to contribute as a coauthor in publications resulting from the research project, depending on the interest of each candidate. There is also the possibility of developing a project of scientific initiation, masters or similar within the main project. The candidate must be available between the beginning of the second fortnight of April and the end of July 2018 to carry out the field activities. Transportation, accommodation and subsistence costs will be covered by the project. A daily fee will also be payable, the amount depending on the candidate's experience.

Requirements Essential: • Enthusiasm and willingness to work with communities, • Ability to spend long periods in the field.

Desirable: • Interest in social sciences and desire to contribute to environmental research, • Previous experience working with communities, • National Driver's License (CNH) - Minimum category B, • Ability to communicate in English.
